Swine flu goes on rampage globally
Swine flu is increasingly going on rampage worldwide. The number of swine flu cases is surging, and the global death toll due to swine flu crossed 100. There are five more deaths in the North America – four in Mexico and one in United States. Before these recent deaths, the World Health Organisation (WHO) recorded 95 swine flu deaths, with total 13,398 people infected with the A(H1N1) virus in 48 countries.
Globally, the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean and Uruguay in South America have confirmed first two cases of swine flu, increasing the number of countries with swine flu cases to 50. In South America, Chile has confirmed 119 cases, and Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador have also reported some cases.
In North America, the Mexico Health Ministry reported that four recent fatalities have taken the death toll to 89 with 100 new swine flu cases, taking the total number of cases to 4,821. The recent swine flu death in United States, second in Chicago has taked the US death toll to 15. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Wednesday reported that the total number of confirmed and probable swine flu cases has surged to 7,927 in 48 U.S. states. The number of swine flu cases in Canada has crossed 1,000 with 197 new cases. According to Health Canada, the total number of swine flu cases is now 1,118 total A(H1N1) cases, with two fatalities.
In Europe, Romania has confirmed first swine flu infection in a woman, who returned from New York with her two children. Greece has reported their swine flu case.
Swine flu is spreading in Asia. Singapore has confirmed its first case and Hong Kong has confirmed 10 cases of Swine flu. The government of India has also reported a few cases of swine flu. The India government is building stockpile of Tamiflu (Oseltamivir Phosphate) drug for treatment of H1N1 influenza or swine flu. The government of India has freed the imported Tamiflu from the customs duty.
In Australia, the number of swine flu cases has crossed 100. The government of Australia has placed order for 10 million doses of swine flu vaccine developed by pharmaceutical company CSL Ltd. The Australian Health Minister, Nicola Roxon has confirmed that the government will also buy an additional 1.6 million doses of antiviral drug Relenza to boost the national stockpile to 10.3 million doses of anti-viral drugs. The majority of the swine flu cases in Australia are from the most populous states of New South Wales and Victoria in south east. Three fresh cases have been confirmed on a cruise liner, the Pacific Dawn.
