Sitting Down For Long Time Increases Anxiety

Desk job could lead to anxiety, according to a new report. The low-energy activities that require an individual to sit for a long time are found to be linked with increased risk of anxiety, an emotion which is characterized by an unpleasant state of inner turmoil.

As per the new report, activities like playing games on personal computer, watching television or working on computer are called sedentary behavior. The mental health illness affects millions of people.

The recent study has found a link between the low-energy activities and health problems like heart disease, obesity, osteoporosis and type-2 diabetes. The study has been the first to examine the link between anxiety and sedentary behavior.

While providing information about the study, Megan Teychenne, lecturer at Deakin University's Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition Research and lead researcher of the study, said, "Our research showed that evidence is available to suggest a positive association between sitting time and anxiety symptoms - however, the direction of this relationship still needs to be determined through longitudinal and interventional studies".

During the study, researchers considered results of about nine earlier studies that examined relationship between anxiety and sedentary behavior. Results of five of the nine studies showed that increase in sedentary behavior was linked with increased risks of anxiety. The remaining four studies suggested that total sitting time was linked with increased risk of anxiety.

According to one of the nine studies, 36% high school students who spend about two hours in watching TV or computer were more likely to experience anxiety compared to students who watch TV for less than two hours.
