Sir Tim Hunt said “now seriously” after his crass remarks on Women

Earlier this month, Sir Tim Hunt faced a lot of criticism when news broke out that he had demanded single-sex laboratories and said that women in science either fall in love or cry. He made the comments in a room full of female scientists.

According to a journalist, who was present at the event held for the World Conference of Science Journalists in South Korea, the Nobel Prize winner also thanked women for making lunch.

After he was criticized over his comments, Sir Tim swiftly apologized and said that his remarks were intended to be light-hearted and ironic. However, he resigned from his job at the Royal Society and University College London (UCL) after angry reaction of people.

However, a transcript of his speech, reported by a European Commission official present at the event, shows that his statements were taken out of the context. Hunt said that his comments that women in labs fall in love and cry were light-hearted. As per the transcript, he later said, “Now seriously, I'm impressed by the economic development of Korea. And woman scientists played, without doubt an important role in it”.

According to the official, Tim said, he felt strange to be asked to speak to women scientists. According to reports, even after release of this transcript, people are not paying attention to the facts. They are saying that the comments unacceptable. Some say that if someone says that he doesn’t want to work with women since he might fall in love with them, he should not have professional power over women.
