Significant Amount of Sea Level Rise Will Occur Even After Most Modest Temp Increase
Scientists through a new study have warned that even if there will be most modest temperature increase, a significant amount of sea level rise around the world’s coastal area will be seen.
The scientist community has stated that the 2 degrees Celsius is the most the average global temperature can rise to avoid the damaging effects of the climate change.
The study published in the journal Science has clearly outlined what happened to global sea levels last time when the CO2 levels in atmosphere were as high as they are today.
Researchers showed that nearly 3 million years ago, when the average temperature on earth was about 5 degrees Fahrenheit warmer. Sea levels roughly went 20 feet higher than their current levels, and the Arctic was recorded to be 14 degrees F warmer than it currently is.
Andrea Dutton, a geochemist at the university of Florida and one of the study’s authors, said, “Even if we meet that 2C target, in past with those types of temperatures, we may be committing ourselves to this level of sea level rise in the long term… Once these ice sheets start to melt, changes become irreversible”.
Researchers in their study’s findings gave some shocking conclusions stating that even if the temperature rose most moderately the sea were to raise by 20 feet, reshaping the entire coastal US.
Louisiana would lose its boot shape, and San Francisco could become its own island, showed study. In comparison to preindustrial times, the sea is now about 8 inches higher than it used to be.
