SeaWorld releases Video Showing Former Orca Trainer Drunk, using Racial Slurs
A video shows a former orca trainer appearing to be drunk. SeaWorld Ex-employee John Hargrove could also be seen in the cell-phone video using racial slurs.
Fred Jacobs of SeaWorld said about the video’s release that it was important to release the video after receiving it this weekend from an internal whistleblower. Hargrove took part in the movie Blackfish and he did not respond to the request for comment when approached by FOX 5.
“I remember parts of that night and drinking, and you can clearly tell we definitely had a lot to drink. But that video is taken completely out of context. There’s not a proper beginning or end”, Hargrove told U-T San Diego.
He said that it is really disgusting to learn that SeaWorld has gone to such a level of a smear campaign to make personal attacks.
An almost 5-year-old video was sent by SeaWorld to reporters, showing former employee Hargrove drinking and repeatedly using a racial epithet during a recorded cellphone conversation.
Hargrove was previously admonished for a severe safety violation involving the park's killer whales, resulting in his transfer from the orca stadium. He took the slight to heart and left the job from SeaWorld.
SeaWorld spokesman Fred Jacobs said John's behavior and language have offended workers in SeaWorld. The video particularly deserves to be criticized since John Hargrove is wearing a SeaWorld shirt. Had SeaWorld known that he was engaged in this kind of behavior, it wouldn’t have wasted even a second to terminate Hargrove's employment, added Jacobs.
