Scientists to take action on global climate crisis at Paris in December 2015
Scientists are drawing leaders and representatives from civil society organizations to sign up to an eight-point plan of action at Paris in December 2015.
The UN meeting’s goal is to limit global warming to below 2C by moving to zero carbon emissions by 2050. The event is also considered as an important platform to take action to prevent dangerous climate change.
According to an alliance of climate researchers from 17 institutions, with climate chance can be averted and there is a lot of scientific evidence to that shows that. However, a bold action is the need of the hour.
The statement requires to limit global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius, to keep future CO2 emissions below 1,000 gigatonnes (billion tonnes), to create a zero-carbon society by 2050, to follow equity of approach with richer countries in order to help poorer ones and technological research and innovation.
It also calls for a global strategy to address loss and damage from climate change, to safeguard ecosystems such as forests and oceans that absorb CO2 and to provide climate finance for developing countries.
According to Chair of the Earth League, Johan Rockstrom, of the Stockholm Resilience Centre in Sweden, the statement summarized what the group of scientists believes could happen during the Paris talks. The Earth League includes 17 scientific research institutions around the world, including two in the UK.
Rockstrom said, "Six years after the failure at Copenhagen, the world now has a second chance to agree upon a safe pathway towards a future that does not undermine human well-being in the world”.
According to him, the statement positioned the scientific stance on what is required so that risk of severe climate change linked with sea-level rise, heat waves, droughts and floods can be avoided.
