Saturn's Phoebe ring is bigger than expected

Astronomers are saying that Saturn's biggest ring Phoebe has recently broken its records. It has been discovered by them that the ring is over twice the thickness of what it was thought to be in the beginning.

However, in the face of the thickness, it cannot be observed with naked eye. The ring consists of tiny particles, and therefore these could not be seen with naked eye. It is an oversized ring known as Phoebe Ring. This finding could reveal information regarding the evolution of the Saturinian ring system.

In reality, the Saturn's ring is 200 times bigger compared to what was earlier thought; this ring is darker, consisting of tiny particles in addition being more mysterious. Using telescope, an Italian astronomer Givanni Domenico Cassini observed the moon that is now called Iapetus in 1671 and this indicated for the first time that Saturn has a secret ring.

The moon that was found by him is quite bizarre with one side white and the other side entirely black. It was thought by scientists that Iapetus was plowing through a ring of dark material that was not observed from Earth.

The research has been published in the journal Nature. According to a University of Maryland, College Park planetary scientist, Douglas Hamilton and the research lead writer, "I used to be giving talks, saying Saturn has an enormous invisible ring, which makes you sound simply completely loopy. It is 10 to 20 occasions bigger than the second-largest ring, so this factor is completely gargantuan".
