Sahara to invest at least Rs 2,400 crore in West Bengal
Sahara Group has announced its plans to build a medical college and develop a township, at an investment of at least Rs 2,400 crore, in West Bengal.
Subroto Roy, the chairman of the Sahara India Pariwar, revealed that the group's plans to build a medical college, which would include a 500-bed hospital, at an investment of Rs 400 crore in Sonarpur, which is situated nearly 30 kilometers south of South 24 Parganas district.
The group will invest another Rs 2,000 crore on developing a township in Dankuni, which is situated nearly 30 kilometers west of Kolkata. The planned "state-of-the-art" township in Dankuni, which will be developed on a 1,000-acre plot, will offer all modern living amenities.
Announcing the plans, Roy added, "We are looking at the required land parcels. We need around 500 acres of land and are buying it directly."
It is not the first time when the Sahara Group is eyeing huge investments in West Bengal. During the previous Left Front government, the Sahara Group had announced a tourism project. The project was to be created in the deltaic region of the Sunderbans, but it could never see the light of the day because of severe criticism and objections from environmentalists.
Roy also announced that he would seek the Supreme Court's permission to deposit the deeds worth Rs 20,000 crore, as demanded by the Securities & Exchange Board of India (Sebi), to a nationalized bank. It may be noted here that last week the apex court had restricted Roy from leaving the country due to the group's failure in furnish proper title deeds.
