RWF humiliate BHEL

It rained goals at the Bangalore Football Stadium on Wednesday, with Rail Wheel Factory pasting Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd by a 9-0 margin in the Super Division league. Nanda Kumar of RWF got the first four goals, and the first hat-trick of the league as well.

The half-time score read 5-0, with Satish Kumar following up on Nanda Kumar's four-goal strike. BHEL replaced goalkeeper Dilip Kumar with Santhosh, but even that did not change their fortune as RWF merrily continued to pound away at their goal, and embarrassing them so much that the yellow-jerseyed BHEL players lost heart midway through the contest.

Nanda Kumar, 24, who comes from the footballing nursery of Murphy Town, is a Sports Authority of India product. After his SAI training, he turned out for MEG and then to league favourites HAL, where he spent three years before finding a job with RWF.

It took six minutes before the BHEL goal fell in the second half. A free-kick from Satish Kumar on the right was directed in by a leaping Soy John to make it 6-0.

Mani Maran, who replaced Soy John soon after, stepped up the pace and immediately created the seventh goal. Having drawn the goalkeeper out on the left, he squared to Naveen Babu, who just had to stick his leg out to direct the ball in.

Whatever RWF tried came good – it was just that kind of day. C Prakash attempted a right-footed drive from around 30 yards, and even he must have been surprised to see the ball beat the dive from goalkeeper Santhosh.

The final nail came four minutes before close when Prakash initiated a counter-attack and set Nanda Kumar free on the left. The wiry striker drew out the keeper and played to Naveen Babu, who had an open goal to fire into.

BHEL's wretched day came to an end when they at last found the RWF net in the dying moments – only for the linesman to signal off-side.
