Rosetta Spacecraft finds huge sinkholes on surface of Comet 67P
According to reports, some huge sinkholes have been found on the surface of Comet 67P. The holes have been observed by NASA officials by examining the comet thoroughly with help of Rosetta spacecraft. According to scientists, the holes were similar to the size of the pyramids of Egypt.
NASA and Rosetta spacecraft are excitedly looking at these massive sinkholes for the reason that they are having a large diameter and large dimensions. A material on the surface of Comet 67P underwent destruction and after that the huge holes appeared on the surface.
Rosetta spacecraft is orbiting the comet since August and scientists are keeping an eye on it. The spacecraft found some sinkholes, approximately 656 feet wide in diameter and 180 meters deep. It is thought that the finding will assist scientists in knowing more about formation of comets.
NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California and Paul Weissman said the discovery of the holes came as a surprise. According to reports, it is thought that these kinds of comets are gravel piles of boulder-sized mini-comets made of organics and ices. As per reports, some of 67P’s sinkholes are leaving the jets of dust particles.
According to a researcher, Jean-Baptiste Vincent and the Planck Institute for Solar System Research, “We see jets rising from the cracked areas of the walls inside the pits. These cracks mean that volatiles trapped under the surface that can be warmed more easily and subsequently escape into space”.
