RoboHow developing robots capable of working in kitchen
A new frontier in robotic science is to develop kind of robots that can behave more like humans. AI technology has undoubtedly led to significant advancement how machines navigate their surroundings, but it has still not been able to make them work in tandem with human beings.
RoboHow is a European initiative intended for living the challenge y developing systems capable of helping robots learn and communicate similar to human beings. The aim is to preprogram these machines so that they can flawlessly perform certain tasks and piece different information together, use it and bring it into use whenever required in future.
RoboHow, founded in 2012, has been helping in the development of the German robot PR2 so that it can step in the right direction. The PR2 can perform physical actions as per instructions available from websites like WikiHow.
The robot testing as of now involves performing tasks in the kitchen, specifically pancakes. Don't trivialize these tasks as they might appear menial, but their precise execution highly depends on an intricate framework of prior knowledge of micro-tasks that humans take for granted. One of the examples is understanding the amount of pressure required to open a container.
Efforts are also being made to help robots learn from physically watching humans perform certain tasks.
RoboHow's website says that making popcorn (from a pot) and mastering the flip while preparing non-burnt pancakes are some of the android activities at hand.
