Rising price of milk taking toll on the health of children
Recent study revealed that rising price of milk is taking toll on the health of children. Study by Otago University revealed that due to high price of milk, families are opting for soft drinks which are gateway to various problems such as the risk of obesity and dental problems.
Milk is a rich source of calcium and protein. Calcium is necessary for "laying down" good bone structure and texture. Lack of calcium during childhood increases the risk of osteoporosis.
Researchers revealed that the price of milk has increased by almost a quarter in two years. The price of two litres of milk has increased by more than 20 per cent in just last two years. Hence low-income families are unable to provide milk to their wards.
Findings of a 2002 Ministry of Health survey indicated that only 38 per cent of children drank milk daily. Nearly 17 per cent children do not drink it at all or less than monthly.
Otago University researcher Moira Smith said: "Half a century ago, governments supported the right of every child to cheap milk at home."
Researchers laid stress on availability of milk at affordable prices.
