Researchers develop new food product with great nutritional value

According to reports, scientists at Oregon State University have developed a food product that is said to be good for health and its taste is similar to that of bacon. As per experts, it could be the greatest food product so far.

However, it may not look that tempting in the beginning. The food product is a red marine algae called as dulse that resembles translucent red lettuce. It grows along the Pacific and Atlantic coastlines.

It is basically used in dried form as a nutritional supplement or cooking ingredient; however, a new strain of dulse has been created and patented by researcher Chris Langdon and colleagues at OSU's Hatfield Marine Science Center.

According to Langdon, “The dulse grows using a water recirculation system. Theoretically, you could create an industry in eastern Oregon almost as easily as you could along the coast with a bit of supplementation. You just need a modest amount of seawater and some sunshine”.

This strain is a rich source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants with as much as 16% protein in dry weight. According to researchers, its nutritional value is two times more than a popular superfood kale and kale’s taste is also different.

This strain of dulse tastes like bacon after getting fried. Langdon has been growing dulse since 15 years. He said it has a strong flavor of bacon. In the beginning, the entire project was aimed at feeding abalone and not humans. After that the idea of its consumption by humans came into picture.
