Researchers Announce $100 Million Effort to Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence

Stephen Hawking and Yuri Milner, a Russian entrepreneur has recently announced a $100 million effort to search for the extraterrestrial intelligence. The effort called 'Breakthrough Listen', which will collect bulks of data will be open to public.

Professor Schmidt said in a statement that the discovery of an alien life on an extrasolar planet can change how humanity sees itself in the vast universe. Humans so far might have not yet encountered life outside of our planet, but many scientists calls it inevitability.

Tony Beasley, director of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, said, "Beginning early next year, approximately 20 percent of the annual observing time on the GBT will be dedicated to searching a staggering number of stars and galaxies for signs of intelligent life via radio signals".

The researchers associated with the effort stated thatBreakthrough Listen's software and hardware will be compatible with other telescopes, so people around the world can join the quest to find intelligent alien life, possibly developing their own methods to analyze the data.

Researchers during the study will scan at least five times more of the radio spectrum. It will do it approximately 100 faster than the previous speed.

The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) projects traditionally search for radio or optical signals that seem to be from an artificial source. Researchers said that the idea that we might not be alone in the universe is not new; therefore researchers think that search for extraterrestrial life will be worth.
