Reliance Sibur JV starts construction of India’s first butyl rubber plant

Reliance Sibur JV starts construction of India’s first butyl rubber plant Reliance Sibur Elastomers Pvt. Ltd. (RSEPL), a joint venture between India's RIL and Russia's Sibur, has started building their new butyl rubber plant in Jamnagar.

The JV aims to commission the plant, which will be India's first manufacturer of butyl rubber, in 2015. The manufacturing facility will reportedly produce 100,000 tonnes of butyl rubber annually.

The JV was signed in February last year. The two companies signed a technology licence deal that facilitates use of Sibur's proprietary butyl rubber production technology at the new manufacturing facility. RIL will provide top-notch infrastructure and utilities and also supply monomer to the facility.

Dmitry Konov, chief executive of Sibur, said that the upcoming manufacturing facility would meet Asian country's demand for butyl rubber.

Speaking on the topic, Konov said, "Sibur's technologies together with Reliance's infrastructure and resources will help to establish a facility that will meet the demand for butyl rubber in Asian market."

When commissioned in 2015, the JV will be among the world's top five producers of butyl rubber.
