Scientists establish formula for predicting climate change impact on salmon stocks

Washington, Nov 13 : Researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC) have found a way to accurately predict the impact of climate change on endangered Pacific salmon stocks that could result in better management strategies.

The findings are among the first to quantify a relationship between river temperature and salmon mortality rate.

While climate change and rising river temperatures have been linked to dwindling salmon stocks, other factors have made it difficult to measure the exact impact.

Those factors include diseases, fisheries and man-made structures such as dams and fish ladders.

Wind power can alter ocean currents and boost marine life

Washington, Nov 13: A new study has suggested that generating wind power at sea may alter ocean currents and marine ecosystems, bringing nutrient-rich waters up from the depths, which marine life can thrive on.

Extracting energy from wind changes regional air currents, which can in turn affect how the nearby ocean circulates, Goran Brostrom of the Norwegian Meteorological Institute in Oslo, told Discovery News.

Brostrom has shown in a model that winds swirling at five to 10 meters per second (11 to 22 miles per hour) downwind of large farms are uneven.

As they blow over the ocean they can roil the waters, causing upwelling.
