Oscar-famed Pinky gets grand welcomeVaranasi, Feb 28 : Pinky Sonkar, the protagonist of Oscar winning documentary `Smile Pinky', got a rousing welcome at her native village here on Saturday.

`Smile Pinky' is the story of a child with a lip deformity which won the award for best short documentary at the famed Academy Awards.

Pinki's neighbours and relatives gathered at the Varanasi airport and greeted her with garlands.

The shy little girl was accompanied by her father and Dr. Subodh Singh, the surgeon who gave Pinki the smile that ushered her into the Hollywood's Red Carpet.

BSP's Kunwar Devendra Singh to contest from Etah

Etah (Uttar Pradesh), Feb 28 : Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has declared sitting Etah MP Kunwar Devendra Singh as its candidate from the Etah parliamentary constituency.

Singh had left the Samajwadi Party on Friday and joined the BSP.

The BSP has gained six MPs from Samajwadi Party so far, the other ones being Shahid Siddiqui, who was elected to Rajya Sabha as Samajwadi Party candidate, Afzal Ansari from Ghazipur, Dhaniram Verma, Gauri Shanker, Kriti Vardhan Singh and Saif-ur-Rehman Barq.

Samajwadi Party sources claim that majority of the MPs left the party in recent times after being denied ticket for the coming Lok Sabha elections.

Tigress' roar hushed, but row continues

The roar of the man-eating tigress roaming about the jungles of Faizabad has been silenced by the bullets of an ace shooter. But the controversy surrounding the felling of the feline is likely to echo for a long time.

The two-and-a-half-year-old tigress had strayed from the Pilibhit jungles in central UP some time in November. It had travelled over 300 km, crossing half-a-dozen districts, and killed four people. The cat was shot down by Nawab Shafat Ali Khan of Hyderabad on Tuesday evening.

Three hundred sixty five polling booths have been set up for three lakhs forty five thousand voters to cast their votes. One hundred fifty three polling booths have been identified as sensitive.

The by-poll has been necessitated following the death of a BSP MLA.
