‘Insane or convicted person could become Pak President without Article 63’

Lahore, Sep 23 : If Article 63 of the Constitution did not apply to the President, even an "insane" or convicted person could become President, said former judge Tariq Mehmood on Geo TV’s "Great Debate on Presidential Election".

He said that if two provincial assemblies were dissolved before the election, the country’s political scenario would become "dangerous".

Government steps up effort to re-elect Musharraf unopposed

Islamabad, Sep 23 : The government has stepped up its efforts to "re-elect" President Pervez Musharraf unopposed, with the opposition parties still divided on the issue of resigning from the assemblies, and they have not yet agreed on a joint candidate for the presidential election.

The PPP and the JUI-Fazl have not yet agreed to their legislators resigning from the assemblies along with the All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) lawmakers on September 29.

Musharraf to start his poll campaign from Balochistan

Islamabad, Sep 23 : President Pervez Musharraf has decided to launch his presidential election campaign from Balochistan on Monday.

Sources said that Musharraf would start the campaign in Balochistan, where he would meet with the members of the national and provincial assemblies to seek their votes for his election.

At a meeting in Islamabad with Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Saturday, PML-Q chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain said nomination papers for Musharraf’s re-election would be submitted on September 27.

‘Musharraf will stay in uniform if assemblies dissolve before his re-election’

Islamabad, Sep 21: Pakistan’s Railways Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed has said that President Pervez Musharraf would be in uniform if the present assemblies are dissolved prior to his re-election.

If elected by the present assemblies, Musharraf would doff his uniform before taking oath of office for a new term, Rashid told a TV channel.

Musharraf would file his nomination papers after consultation with the Pakistan Muslim League (Qaumi) leadership, Rashid added.

Islamabad, Sep 20 : By playing a key role in the deportation of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to Jeddah, the Saudi Government has in fact helped Pakistan to avert a threat to its peace and unity, Saudi Ambassador Ali Awadh Asseri has claimed.

Commenting on the Saudi support to Pakistan, Asseri said, "This support has been extended not as a favour to another country, but as a fulfilment of responsibility towards a friend and a brother."

Pak religious extremist threatens to bomb girls’ school

Islamabad, Sep 20 : An Islamic extremist has threatened to bomb a girls’ school in Taxila if its teachers and students don’t wear a veil.

The principal of the high school is said to have received a letter from an unidentified man, a local source said.

"Yes we have received a threatening letter from a religious fanatic, and we are scared," said Shakeela, the acting principal of the school.

The school management has informed the students about the letter and told that nothing would happen to them if they wore a veil, she added.
