Australian junior champion under pressure after incident

Melbourne - Reigning Australian Open junior champion Bernard Tomic faces pressure to keep his family in check after an on-court incident which resulted in an apology on Saturday from his over- wrought father.

John Tomic was hammered in the local press after yanking his son off court during a minor event near Perth earlier this month, complaining that foot faults against an opponent were not being called.

The incident provoked an International Tennis Federation Investigation and could result in the youngster not being able to play in the Australia open, which start on January
19.

It also brought back nightmares of the template for poor tennis parents, Serbian bad dad Damir Dokic, now estranged from his daughter Jelena.

WA, Victoria to seek Champions League compensation from CA

Australia Cricket LogoMelbourne, Dec 13 : Western Australia and Victoria believe that they have missed out on a minimum of 600,000 Australian dollars and will ask Cricket Australia for compensation following the cancellation of the inaugural Champions League Twenty20 tournament in India.

Tournament officials decided on Friday not to stage the event, which was cancelled due to the Mumbai terrorist attacks. The tournament will now be held in October 2009.

Adventurer rescued after spending 295 days at sea

Australia FlagMelbourne, Dec 13 : A solo adventurer rowing from Peru to Sydney has been rescued off the coast of Australia after being at sea since February 21.

Rower Alexandro Bellini's wife telephoned water police to say her husband needed help, 65 nautical miles off Laurieton on the New South Wales mid-north coast, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The 30-year-old man had contacted his wife to say he was nearing exhaustion. He had been at sea since leaving Lima, Peru on February 21

The police vessel Nemesis was dispatched and Australian Search and Rescue (AusSAR) in Canberra sent an aircraft to the area.

Oz court serves default judgement via Facebook!

Melbourne, December 13: Facebook has apparently started to leave its impact on judicial systems also, with the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory ruling that a default judgement can be served on defendants by notification on the social networking website.

This is believed to be the first instance when any court in the world has ordered the use of a social networking website for serving a default judgement on the defendant, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

A default judgement is given by the court where the defendant does not appear in court to defend the case. Once the court awards it, the plaintiff must serve it on the defendant, which is usually done by way of personal service or post.
