Gangster Ateeq Khan is headed back to prison while four guilty policemen have been suspended.

Charged with murders, abductions and other heinous crimes, Khan was brought from Uttar Pradesh's Siddhartnagar district jail to Kanpur Dec 17 to attend a court case.

Uttar Pradesh set to shiver  Lucknow, Dec 22 : Chilly winds will lash most parts of Uttar Pradesh in the next 48 hours, bringing down the temperature by several notches, officials said Tuesday.

The fall in temperature will follow changing wind patterns because of snowfall in the hilly regions, the Meteorological department said.

Uttar Pradesh Met director J. P. Gupta told IANS: "The state appears to be moving towards normal winter owing to cyclonic circulations, western disturbance and high pressure belt."

The 24-hour helpline, which would be functional from January 2010, would be part of the VHP's "social responsibility programmes", the group's Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand organising secretary Purshottam Narain Singh told IANS.

MayawatiLucknow, Dec 19 : To check rising prices in the state, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati Saturday issued a stern warning to hoarders, a day after she asked the authorities to run mobile shops to sell basic food items at controlled rates.

Following her instructions, Chief Secretary Atul Kumar Gupta Friday promptly convened a video-conference call of all divisional commissioners and district magistrates, directing them to ensure that hoarding of essential commodities was not allowed at any cost.    

Principal Secretary (Food and Civil Supplies) Jacob Thomas said: "If necessary, we will import of pulses."

Policeman suspended for beating girl Lucknow, Dec 19 : An Uttar Pradesh policeman has been suspended after he and a colleague thrashed a 12-year-old girl accused of committing a theft, police said Saturday.

Sidharthnagar district Deputy Superintendent of Police D. N. Pandey told IANS that while Constable Raj Yadav was suspended, Sub-Inspector Ram Bharti had been sent to the police lines.    

The two allegedly beat the girl Friday in Khajua village, some 350 km from Lucknow. The girl is battling for life in a hospital, her distraught mother Kismati told reporters in Sidharthnagar.

Sugarcane stir hots up in Uttar Pradesh

Farmers have not been mollified by the government's move to persuade mill owners to shell out a price higher than the state advised price (SAP) of Rs. 165-170 a quintal, fixed in October.

Thousands of farmers converged here from different parts of the state to stand outside the office of the state sugarcane commissioner.

Nearly 200 youths were booked for indulging in vandalism and arson in Akbarpur area of Ambedkar Nagar district, some 200 km from Lucknow, police inspector S. N. Gupta told reporters.

"The students were misinformed by some Hindi newspapers that carried false reports that BSF would hold its constable recruitment drive Dec 17 in Ambedkar Nagar," Gupta said.

Five poachers held with animal skinsLucknow, Dec 17 - Five poachers from Bihar were arrested with skins of leopards, spotted deer and other animals in Uttar Pradesh's Sonbhadra district, police said Thursday.

The five men, who are from Kaimur district in Bihar, were arrested Wednesday night from Pannuganj town, some 250 km from Lucknow.

"The five men, who are in the age group of 35-40, have confessed to have been in the illegal wildlife trade for the past five years," police Inspector Sheshdhar Pandey told reporters Thursday in Sonbhadra.


Blood signature campaign for Bundelkhand

Lucknow, Dec 17 - A regional party, campaigning for a Bundelkhand state out of districts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, Thursday announced that it would start a blood signature campaign for the formation of the state.

Activists of the Bundelkhand Ekikrit Party (BEP) would start the campaign in Uttar Pradesh's Banda district Thursday, party leaders said.

"By the signature campaign, which will be officially launched Thursday, we want to draw attention of the state and the central governments towards the seriousness of the demand that has gone unnoticed during the last several years," Surendra Tiwari, general secretary of BEP, told reporters in Banda, 300 km from here.


Take steps to solve CNG shortage, orders high court

Allahabad-highcourtLucknow, Dec 16 : The Allahabad High Court Wednesday ordered the Uttar Pradesh government to take adequate measures to end the shortage of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in the state capital.

The Lucknow bench of the high court also instructed the government to submit report on the matter within three weeks.

The court's directives came on a petition of the Awadh Auto Chalak Trade Union (AACTU), which alleged that the CNG shortage was adversely affecting the public transport system in Lucknow and that there was an urgent need to set up more gas stations in the state capital.


Four coal wagons catch fire in Uttar Pradesh

No causality was reported in the accident that affected the busy Delhi-Howrah trunk rail route.

"It could have resulted into a major incident. However, by the timely intervention of the fire department officials it was averted," Government Railway Police (GRP) Inspector A. K. Dixit told reporters in Firozabad, some 300 km from here.
