Kolkata on high alert after e-mail warning bomb blast

KolkataKolkata, July 30: Kolkata has been placed on high alert after an e-mail from the terrorist group ‘India Mujahideen’ to a TV channel and other media houses warned of blasts at the Calcutta High Court and at a top private hospital.

As many as 70 per cent of vehicles disappeared from roads after an investigation search was launched.

Police have detained Kaushik Bose, the son of a cyber cafe owner in Kolkata''s upmarket Salt Lake area, and questioned him throughout the night.

Kaushik said he would help the police identify the people who had sent the threatening e-mail from the cyber cafe.

Speaker breaks silence on his expulsion by CPM

Somnath ChatterjeeKolkatta, July 29 : Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, who was expelled by the Communist Party of India-Marxist for refusing to quit his constitutional post despite party directive, said that he has left it to the people to judge whatever had happened.

"I will speak after a few days. I leave it to the people (to judge)," he said yesterday to media persons after visiting his ailing sister at her Salt Lake home in Kolkata.

This was Chatterjee’ first statement to the media following his expulsion from CPM for refusing to quit his post.

Bangladesh Rifles kill BSF soldier, injure farmer on Indo-Bangla border

Kolkata, July 23 : Bangladesh Rifles today gunned down a Border Security Force soldier and injured a farmer at Mirsultanpur village in West Bengal''s Malda District on the Indo-Bangla border.

Sudarshan, 40, was killed, as he went to the border to relieve himself.

This soldier of the BSF’s 123 Battalion died of his wounds while on the way to the Malda Sadar Hospital.

“There was an exchange of fire between the border guards after the incident but the situation was under control as senior officers of police and the BSF rushed to the spot, said District Magistrate of Malda C R Das.

The farmer was watering his land when Bangladesh Rifles opened fire on him and injured his knee.
