Assam journalists call for peace in the regionfeGuwahati, March 27 : Following various problems being faced by journalists fraternity in Assam, especially during conflicts, recently a meet was organised here to highlight such issues, and discuss scribes' role in bringing peace in the State.

The second state-level convention of the Journalists Federation of Assam was held in Guwahati recently.

One of the key issues that the convention pondered was the violence unleashed by United Liberation Front of Asom (or ULFA) that has disrupted normal life in the state.

Naveen Chawla to arrive in Guwahati todayGuwahati, Mar 23: Election Commissioner Naveen Chawla will arrive here on a two-day visit today to review poll preparedness for the coming Lok Sabha polls.

Chawla will be accompanied by two Deputy Election Commissioners Dr Alok Shukla and J P Prakash.

During his visit, Chawla will hold discussion with representatives of various political parties and will take stock of arrangements for the upcoming elections. He will also discuss the law and order situation.

 Assam’s militancy victims demand end to violenceGuwahati, Mar. 9 : In a bid to gather support against violence in the state, militancy affected families gathered in Guwahati have launched a program called, `Sankalp'.

So far, more than 10,000 people have died and 6000 families have been seriously affected by militancy and violence in Assam.

`Sankalp' was held is association of a project called `Aashwas', which was initiated by the Assam police to help children affected by militancy.

An art exhibition was also held where those affected shared their thoughts about militancy.

45 militants lay down arms in Assam

45 militants lay down arms in AssamGuwahati, Mar 6 : Forty-five cadres of various militant groups from northeast recently laid down their arms in Assam''s Kamrup District.

They included 32 cadres of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) along with 13 other cadres from the Karbi Longri NC Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF), the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), the Muslim United Liberation Tigers of Assam (MULTA) and the Peoples Revolutionary Front of Meghalaya laid down their arms before the Army.

The surrendered militants have expressed a desire to live a peaceful life and end destructive activities.

ULFA faction fears sabotage during elections

AssamGuwahati, Feb 21 : A splinter faction of Assam's main rebel group, the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), which prefers to have talks with the Central Government for a negotiated settlement to the separatist issue, said the parent group, which opposed such a move, could sabotage the forthcoming general elections.

The `pro-talks' group, which walked out of the ULFA, declared a unilateral ceasefire last year expecting a reciprocal gesture from the Central Government to restore peace in the region.

ULFA-HUJI terror link to be broken through regional co-operation

Assam, GuwahatiGuwahati, Feb. 18 : Though the United Liberation Front of Assom (ULFA)''s influence in Assam is waning, people here fear that the organization has established close links with the Bangladesh-based terrorist outfit HUJI (Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami) and it is suspected to be involved in creating trouble in country's northeastern states.

The Government of India is taking steps to smash the ULFA-HUJI terror link for ensuring peace and normalcy to the area through regional co-operation.

Bangladesh had become a safe haven for ULFA''s top leadership.
