China, US float positives with "same boat" proverb

China, United StatesBeijing - Top Chinese and US officials on Saturday refined an atmosphere of cooperation by using an ancient Chinese proverb telling the story of warring soldiers forced to share the same boat to cross a river.

"As the world is faced with the grim impact of the financial crisis, I very much appreciate a proverb you quoted that all countries should cross the river peacefully as they are in a common boat," Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao told visiting US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Clinton's remarks that everyone knew what China would and would not say on key issues of global importance didn't go down well with Amnesty, which insisted that Washington must seek have China address the problem of human rights on a priority basis.

Chemical spill cuts tap water to more than 1 million in east China Beijing  - Carbolic acid spilled into a river from a chemical plant and forced the suspension of tap water supplies to more than 1 million people in the eastern Chinese city of Yancheng on Saturday, state media reported.

Officials shut down the Biaoxin Chemical Company and police detained the owners for questioning after the acid polluted two of the three water plants in the city of 1.5 million on Friday, the official Xinhua news agency said.

China summons Russian officials over sinking of cargo ship

China FlagBeijing - China's foreign ministry on Friday said it had summoned Russian officials to express its dissatisfaction over the handling of an incident in which a Chinese cargo ship sank after coming under fire from a Russian coastguard vessel.

Deputy Foreign Ministry Li Hui summoned the Russian ambassador on Thursday, saying China was "shocked" by the incident, the ministry said.

Li accused Russia of failing to mount a timely rescue of sailors from the sinking ship and of not sharing the results of its investigation into the incident.

China jails two Tibetan nuns over protests, group says

China FlagBeijing - A court in south-western China's Sichuan province has sentenced two Tibetan Buddhist nuns to nine and 10 years in prison after a court convicted them of crimes linked to protests last March, a Tibetan exile group reported on Friday.

The Ganzi (Kardze) County Intermediate People's Court sentenced the two nuns from the Pangri Na Convent for taking part in a mass protest in support of Tibetan autonomy and the exiled Dalai Lama, the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) said.

India, China, and Brazil join IOSCO

China MapBeijing, Feb. 20 : India, China, and Brazil have become members of the inner circle of the International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) to formally recognise the influence of their growing economies.

The IOSCO have members representing more than 90 percent of the world''s securities markets with presence in over 100 countries.

The economic slowdown across the world has forced the international financial organization to change the composition of its membership.
