Dhaka  - Bangladesh Thursday asked Malaysian authorities to revise a decision that cancelled visas of some 55,000 Bangladeshi workers in the wake of global recession.

"We expect something positive after the upcoming Malaysian national elections as we have started negotiations," Bangladesh's junior minister for foreign affairs, Hasan Mahmud said.

In intense diplomatic efforts, the Bangladesh government formally requested Kuala Lumpur to take Bangladesh workers, thousands of whom were ready to fly now.

Putrajaya, Mar. 11 : Malaysia’s Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar has informed that the Government has cancelled the work visas of about 55,000 Bangladeshis who have not used them so far.

“This group of workers will be affected by the current freeze and we have already decided to cancel past approvals for those coming here to work in sectors other than those approved,” The Star quoted him, as saying.

Dhaka  - A four-member Scotland Yard team arrived in Dhaka Wednesday to assist Bangladesh authorities in investigating last month's mutiny by paramilitary soldiers that killed 71 people, mostly army officers, officials said.

The British government sent the team on Bangladesh's request to help local authorities investigate the massacre inside the Dhaka headquarters of the Bangladesh Rifle border guards, a British High Commission representative said.

Dhaka, Mar. 10 : Premier investigation agency, Scotland Yard would be sending its team here to help the local investigation agency probe the Bangladesh Rifles
(BDR) mutiny which left 74 BDR personnel dead.

Talking to reporters on Tuesday, Britain''s Minister for International Development, Mike Foster, said the investigative team would consist of four Scotland Yard officials.

According to reports, it is revealed that the revolt could have been pre-planned.

Kuala Lumpur  - Malaysia announced Tuesday that the government will cancel visas for more than 55,000 Bangladeshi nationals who obtained their work permits in
2007, but have yet to enter the country.

The move was in response to a recent disclosure by the Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur that more than 70,000 workers with approved visas would be entering the country soon to work in various industries.

Dhaka  - Two army officers were killed Monday in a helicopter crash in Tangail district of central Bangladesh, according to officials.

Major General Rafiqil Islam and the pilot of the chopper, Lt Col Istiaq Shahid, died on the spot as the helicopter crushed into a field at Kalihati, 85 kilometres northwest of Dhaka, a district administration officer said.

The co-pilot survived the accident with severe injuries and was shifted to Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka.
