54 kg gold haul at Bangalore airportBangalore, Feb 22 - Three men were arrested with 54 kg gold, valued at Rs. 16 crore, at the Kempegowda international airport here late Saturday, police said.

"We trapped the accused and seized the gold on a tipoff from Kolkata police that they were on way to Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu) via Bangalore by a SpiceJet flight," Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast) T. R. Suresh told IANS.

The accused are Balasubramanya, Ravi Varma and Eshwar Murthy.

When a presenter of the IPL host broadcaster asked Pietersen on phone whether he felt more loved in the cricket-crazy nation after what transpired back home earlier in the month, the 33-year-old said : "Umm, I don't know... It feels that way at the moment."

AstraZeneca to shut R&D centre in Bangalore

AstraZenecaBangalore, Jan 29 : British pharma major AstraZeneca plc Wednesday announced the closing of its research and development (R&D) centre here but said it will continue manufacturing and marketing operations in India.

"The decision to close Avishkar R&D centre is part of our global business strategy to simplify R&D footprint and focus resources on three core therapy areas of oncology, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases and respiratory, inflammation and auto-immunity," the company said in a statement.

Advanced light helicopter 'Garuda Vasudha' dedicated to nation

Hindustan-Aeronautics-LimitedBangalore, Jan 22 : Mines Minister Dinsha Patel dedicated the advanced light helicopter "Garuda Vasudha" to the nation here today through video-conferencing.

The helicopter was launched from the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) Complex, Bangalore.  It will be with the Geological Survey of India and is equipped with a Heliborne Geophysical Survey System (HGSS)

Patel also laid the foundation stone of a Centre of Excellence Laboratory building of the GSI at its Bangalore complex at a cost of Rs. 42 crore.

Yeddyurappa to make comeback into BJP today

B S YeddyurappaBangalore, Jan 9 : Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) chief BS Yeddyurappa is all set to make a formal comeback into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which he had deserted to form his own outfit more than a year ago.

Yeddyurappa had earlier voiced his support towards Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi becoming the prime minister and said the merge could strengthen the BJP.

The BJP forced Yeddyurappa to resign as Karnataka's Chief Minister in July 2011 after ombudsman report indicted him in the illegal mining case.

Sidelined by the BJP top leadership, he subsequently quit the party and formed KJP.

Infosys rejigs board as director Balakrishnan quits

V-BalakarishnanBangalore, Dec 20 : Indian IT bellwether Infosys Ltd Friday announced changes in its board following the sudden resignation of its senior director V. Balakrishnan.

In a rejig of its board, the company's nominations and governance committee appointed Biocon Ltd chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw as an independent director and company's executive council member U. B. Pravin Rao as a full-time director.

Pravin Rao is also the company's senior vice-president and global head of its retail, consumer packaged goods, logistics and life sciences business.

Wipro offers fellowship to US school teachers

Wipro-LtdBangalore, Dec 19 : Indian IT bellwether Wipro Ltd Thursday announced a fellowship programme to nurture talent of American school teachers in mathematics and science in collaboration with Michigan State University.

"We are funding the multi-year programme with a $2.8-million grant to initially train about 100 teachers in Chicago public schools in both the subjects," Wipro chief executive T. K. Kurien said in a statement from New Jersey.

"We have attached all assets of Kingfisher Airlines and are in the process of recovering its dues by sale and attachment of properties of the defaulter company," IT official Lokesha said in a statement here.

India delivers Dhruv chopper to Maldives

Maldivian Defence and National Security Minister Mohamed Nazim received the all-weather chopper from HAL chairman R. K. Tyagi in the presence of Southern Naval Command's Commander-in-Chief Vice Admiral Satish Soni at the Kochi naval base in coastal Kerala.

"The ALH will be in Male in January as a made-in-India product with proven track record in both military and civil operations," Tyagi said on the occasion.

Intelligence grid to deter terror attacks: Shinde

Sushilkumar-ShindeBangalore, Dec 14 : The National Intelligence Grid (Natgrid) being set up by the central government across the country would act as a deterrent against terror attacks, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said Saturday.

"As an integrated intelligence grid, the Natgrid will link databases of various departments and ministries for use by intelligence agencies to enhance our counter-terrorism capabilities across the country," Shinde said at an event here.

The home minister laid the foundation stone for the Rs. 92-crore disaster recovery centre of the grid in the city's northern suburb of Yelahanka.

Indian Mars craft tuned to stay course

India-Mars-OrbiterBangalore, Dec 11 : India's Mars spacecraft was fine tuned early Wednesday in the interplanetary space to stay on course in the 680-million-km sun orbit on way to the Red Planet.

"The onboard computer carried the first mid-course correction of the Mars Orbiter at 6:30 a. m. by firing the 22 Newton thrusters for 40.5 seconds," a senior space agency official told IANS.

The spacecraft was 2.9-million km away from the earth when the trajectory correction was carried and cruising at 32 km/second to reach the Martian orbit in mid-September 2014 for its geological exploration.

InfosysBangalore, Dec 2 : Indian IT bellwether Infosys Ltd plans to hire 85 new techies in Australia's New South Wales state in the ensuing fiscal to keep up with its client demand.

"To keep pace with 500 percent business growth in past five years in New South Wales, we have opened a new office in Sydney, which has 140 seat capacity to accommodate new hiring and specialists visiting to Australia for short-term projects," the company said in a statement here Monday.

The global software major's subsidiary has 2,600 software engineers based across Australia and New Zealand.

Italian hairdresser to launch salon in Bangalore
