Melbourne, Mar 3: Exports of Australian milk products to India are set to resume for the first time since 2003 following an agreement between the governments of both countries.

Australian dairy exports to India were worth around 6 million dollars annually when the trade was suspended after the Indian Government changed its requirements for importing goods.

The Australian Government is hopeful that exports will grow beyond the 2003 mark when trade recommences in the near future.

Australia has seen a spurt in the birth rate in what appears to be in answer to the former treasurer's Peter Costello's exhortation for Australian couples to have another child "for the country".

From the mid 1990's Australia's birth rate had been stagnant showing between 255,000 and 260,000 babies born every year. In 2004, the then treasurer Peter Costello introduced the $3000 Baby Bonus payment and research has shown the birth rate in NSW for women having their third or subsequent child rising significantly across all sectors of society.

Health Minister Nicola Roxon announced that private health insurance premiums will go up by an average of 6.02% on April 1. She said she had written to several large funds in this regards and had challenged their request for larger premium rises.

"Without that close scrutiny, premium rises would have been higher for up to eight million Australians," she said.

"This year's increase is the result of increased benefits paid to patients, rising health service costs, and investment losses from the global financial crisis."
