Hundreds of angry Crete farmers remain at Athens port a second dayAthens - More than 1,000 farmers from the southern Mediterranean island of Crete remained camped out at Greece's main port of Piraeus on Tuesday for the second day, determined to drive their tractors in protest through Athens demanding financial help.

The farmers, along with their farm equipment and tractors, arrived in Athens on three vessels from Crete Monday and ended up scuffling with riot police at the port after they prevented them from off- loading their tractors.

Anthen MapAthens - Muslims living in Athens voiced their displeasure Monday over a delay in the construction of a mosque for tens of thousands of Muslims who have been using abandoned factories and converted coffee shops as makeshift prayer houses for years.

The president of the Muslim Union of Greece said the construction of a state-funded mosque and cemetery in Elaionas near the centre of Athens has been faced with countless delays.

In 2007 the Greek government unveiled a bill for the construction of the mosque, saying it would be built on a large plot of land owned by the Greek Navy.

Angry farmers from Crete drive tractors to Greek parliament Athens  - More than 1,000 farmers arrived in Athens with their tractors from the southern Mediterranean island of Crete on Monday, ready to take their protest against low commodity prices to the Greek parliament.

The farmers, arriving on three vessels from Crete, reportedly scuffled with riot police at the port of Pireaus who prevented them from off-loading their tractors. The farmers said they are determined to ride their tractors into the centre of Athens towards the Ministry of Development.

Farmers begin lifting blockades across Greece, borders still closed

GreeceAthens- Farmers protesting falling commodity prices began lifting dozens of roadblocks across Greece on Thursday after accepting an emergency aid package by the government but hundreds others continued to block main border crossings.

In the past week and a half, thousands of farmers used their tractors to create more than 70 roadblocks along all the main highways across Greece.

Some farmers' unions in southern and central Greece began removing their tractors from main highways after accepting the package but other farmers at border crossings with Bulgaria and Turkey and in the agricultural city of Larissa stayed in position.

Greek police arrest 11 as child porn ring is busted

GreeceAthens- Greek police said Monday they had arrested 11 people, among them an Orthodox priest, for alleged participation in an international child pornography ring that distributed images of children as young as six months.

Authorities said they began infiltrating the group, whose members number 24, after being notified by Interpol. British authorities said they had been following the international ring that offered more than 200 sites to "VIP" members.

Greek captain shot dead by pirates off Cameroon coast Athens  - A band of armed pirates shot dead a Greek captain off the coast of Cameroon over the weekend, the latest in a series of attacks on ships in African waters, the Greek Ministry of Merchant Marine said Monday.

The attack against the two Cameroon-flagged fishing trawlers took place on Saturday off Douala, southern Cameroon, the ministry said.

The pirates, aboard at least two speed boats, reportedly seized one of the vessels and tried to direct it towards international waters when the second vessel began to chase them down.
