“Presence of UK forces providing oxygen to Qaeda by offering themselves as a target”

Lahore, Sept 15 : A UN official exclusively entrusted the task of monitoring Al Qaeda’s movements has reportedly said that the presence of British forces in Afghanistan was providing “oxygen” for Al Qaeda “by offering the terrorist group a target”.

Richard Barrett, the head of United Nations’ Al Qaeda Monitoring Unit, who reports directly to the UN Security Council, said that the deployments of foreign troops in the country (Afghanistan) was acting as a ‘glue’ with which Al Qaeda network was “bonding support in the region”, reported the Daily Times.

The bomber drove an explosive-filled vehicle into the UN convoy in Spin Boldak district of southern Kandahar province on Sunday morning, provincial police chief Matiullah Khan said.

He said two Afghan doctors riding in the convoy were killed, and three other officials and at least 12 civilian passersby were injured in the attack which took place in the main market area.

Taliban ambush kills seven Afghan policeKabul - Seven policemen were killed and at least one was missing in a Taliban ambush in southern Afghanistan, a local police official said Sunday.

The police were patrolling in Godal area of Zena Khan district in southern Ghazni province on Saturday evening, when their vehicle came under fire by Taliban militants, Mohammad Zaman, deputy provincial police chief, said.

"Seven police forces including the acting police chief of the district were killed in the attack," Zaman said.

Afghan provincial governor killed in Taliban's bomb attack

Kabul - The governor of Afghanistan's southern Logar province was killed when his vehicle was blown up by a roadside bomb Saturday, police said. Taliban militants claimed responsibility.

Abdullah Wardak and three of his bodyguards were killed in Paghman district of Kabul province on their way to Logar, 40 kilometres south of Kabul city, said Abdul Razaaq, police chief of the district.

"It was around 8:00 am (0330 GMT) that a roadside bomb was remotely detonated when the governor's vehicle was passing by," Razaaq said.
