Redondo Beach to construct a 700-square-foot Barge for Sea Lions

The City of Redondo Beach, City in California, has been working to address complaints from workers and boaters about sea lions. Now, the city has decided to build a barge for sea lions.

After its construction, sea lions in King Harbor will be able to rest on about a 700-square-foot wooden dock. On Tuesday, the Redondo Beach city council voted to spend about $53,000 so that sea lions could be kept from crowding King Harbor's marinas.

Earlier, workers and boaters reported that the mammals have caused more than thousands of dollars in damage. According to them, the animals get into public areas and lash out at people when startled.

Redondo Beach Marina property manager Leslie Page said that the sea lions are very cute animals, but sometime they can have the bite of a bull. According to her, she found five sea lions that were strolling around the parking lot. Page said that she also saw an animal knocking on the front door of a nearby restaurant.

Live-aboard boater Kelly Mohan said that it is completely out of control. Marine biology students at the Chadwick School, who has been studying the sea lions for more than 10 years, said that a bait barge used by the animals sank two years. If the animals will have a haul-out spot, they would be less aggressive.

According to staff members, “Warm water has depleted food sources for the sea lions and stranded them on beaches up and down the coast, a trend that's likely to continue as the summer heats up.” The staff members have expected that the barge will mostly be used by sick, hungry sea lions and their pups.

As per the reports, Redondo Beach‘s tidelands fund would pay for the barge. The barge will have room for more than 110 sea lions.
