Accused Munir Khan, who the police say is a quack, had hired 10 woman doctors to wane off attention of the authorities keeping a check on his illegal activities.

The police on Friday arrested Dr Jayeshri Salunke (28), the fifth woman doctor to be arrested in the case. Four women doctors were arrested on Tuesday along with 12 others when the police raided Khan’s Versova clinic.

The raid was conducted on the basis of a report sent by the Food and Drug Administration, in which Khan’s claim of curing all diseases and ailments including cancer were declared as false. Khan, however, managed to escape, as the other accused held and assaulted the police team.

A senior officer from the Versova police station said Khan hired the 10 female doctors having a Bachelor of Homeopathy Medical Science degree some months ago.

“Khan hired them as the presence of qualified female doctors in the clinic would not raise anybody’s suspicion,” said Inspector Kalpana Gadekar.

Gadekar added, “Also, on the records it would be those women treating the patients, though Khan gave the medicine. Each bottle of medicine that Khan claimed cured all diseases and ailments cost Rs 15,600.”

His patients said the women did not treat them but only asked them questions about their problems. The patients were then sent to Khan, who would convince them to buy his medicine. The police have approached the state medical council for cancelling licences of these doctors.

Khan’s son speaks

Munir Khan’s Dubai-based elder son Sarosh on Friday wrote to the Versova police stating the property sealed by them belongs to him and hence it is illegal to seal it. Sources said Sarosh is wanted in the case and the process to extradite him to India will start soon.
