Portable Pedaling Device in Offices could reduce Sedentary Lifestyle of Workers

For many office-goers, it becomes difficult to do a regular workout. Not to worry, as a new study has come up with a solution for many leading sedentary lifestyle. Researchers have suggested that people can exercise at their desk periodically throughout the day when they work with the help of portable pedaling device.

Researchers said it is very important to work out as sedentary lifestyle brings along increased risk of heart disease, obesity, high cholesterol and high blood sugar levels. In fact, prolonged sitting could lead to development of mental health issues.

Researchers from the University of Iowa said that if portable pedaling device is installed under office desks then the problem can be solved. Office workers can paddle it while doing their work. An experiment was carried out in which the researchers have installed such devices in officers and observed.

The study researchers found that office workers using the device were healthier. Many changes came in them, they were able to lost weight, increase brain power and had fewer sick days. Study’s co-author Lucas J. Carr, said that they have followed 27 obese and overweight office workers who have pedaled the devices for 16 weeks having monitors attached to them.

It was found that the workers have used the device for up to 50 minutes a day. “We are really looking to identify sustainable solutions. That’s what we are working towards—how do we help people engage in healthy behaviors that can be sustained over the long term”, said Carr.
