Poonia wins discuss throw titleIndian athletes started their campaign at an impressive note as they finished at the top spots in five events on the first day of the Birmingham Games athletics meet in Birmingham, United Kingdom on Saturday.

The Beijing Olympian, Krishna Poonia cleared 59.63 meters, which was her best performance in the season, to won the title in the discuss throw event, while another Indian Seema Antil finished at the second spot with 55.77m .

Joseph Abraham, who qualified for August 16-21 Berlin World Athletics Championships, won the title in the 400m hurdles event with clocking 51.50 seconds, and his teammate Avin Thomas clocked 52.02 second to finish at the second position.

Among the other Indians, Om Prakash Singh cleared 17.39m to win gold medal in the shot put event, while Javelin thrower Anil Kumar Singh touched 74.47m to win the gold medal.

Around 60 Indian athletes have currently been undergoing through a training programme at Newham, England for their preparation for Commonwealth Games and World championships.
