Phakic Intraocular Lenses May Be Safer Than Laser

Moorfields Eye HospitalResearchers from Moorfields Eye Hospital in London have discovered a new treatment to correct the problem of myopia in people.

According to them, the novel cure alters the path of light entering the eye by making use of a synthetic lens placed in front of the natural lens.

Myopia, which s also known as short-sightedness, is a problem where the eye focuses effiges opposite retina instead of directly on it. This means objects further away are unclear.

The scientists conducted a review in order to compare these phakic intraocular lenses with laser surgery.

Study's lead author Allon Barsam stated, "Our findings suggest phakic IOLs are safer than excimer laser surgery for correcting moderate to high levels of short-sightedness."

"Although it's not currently standard clinical practice, it could be worth considering phakic IOL treatment over the more common laser surgery for patients with moderate short-sightedness," Allon added.

A year after surgery, the percentage of eyes with 20/20 vision without specs was alike for both procedures, but patients having phakic IOL treatment had clearer spectacle corrected vision and better contrast sensitivity. (With Inputs from Agencies)
