Perseids Meteor Shower to Host Celestial Show Next Week: NASA
Here is good news for stargazers and space enthusiasts as August sky next week is all set to host a mesmerizing celestial show i. e. the Perseids meteor shower. The meteor shower is famous for its bright and fast meteors, said NASA.
NASA said, "If you see one meteor shower this year, make it August's Perseids or December's Geminids. The Perseids feature fast and bright meteors that frequently leave trains, and in 2015 there will be no moonlight to upstage the shower".
The agency said there could be as many as 80 meteors per hour when the Perseids meteor shower will be at its peak on August 13.
EarthSky. org Bruce McClure said this major shower takes place during the lazy hot days of summer when many families are on vacation. Also, this time there won't be any significant distracting moonlight as the moon will only be a thin crescent in the sky, said McClure.
According to Earthsky. org, the Perseids can be best seen during the pre-dawn hours from Tuesday through Aug. 14.
Vincent Perlerin of the American Meteor Society said in a statement that meteor showers are named after the constellation pout of which they appear to come. The constellation Perseus is in the northeastern portion of the sky, it is located left of the Pleiades, the Seven Sisters constellation.
McClure said no special equipment is needed to enjoy this nighttime spectacle, one just needs a dark sky and some patience.
