Perseid meteor shower expected to be more visible this year
View of the Perseid meteor shower is likely to be more visible this year. According to astronomers, the full view of the shower can be grabbed Wednesday and the most dramatic point would come at about 1am.
As many as one shooting star per minute could be seen Thursday night over the Bay Area and much of the United States.Andrew Fraknoi, chairman of the astronomy department at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, said this year is one of the best to take children out and let them enjoy the celestial event.
The good news is the sky will be particularly dark because of a new moon. It means that the moon would be between the sun and earth, sending the sun’s reflection onto the backside of the moon and making the meteor shower much easier to see.
“There will be no moonlight competing with the fainter meteors of the shower. That's a plus. We had no moon five years ago, and it was a good show”, said Ben Burress, staff astronomer at Chabot Space & Science Center in the Oakland Hills.
Chinese astronomers were the first to document the Perseid meteor in 36 AD. The event is visible in August each year. The show is crowned as one of the most reliable and best-known annual meteor showers.
Viewers can best watch the astronomical fireworks outside, turning the lights off and looking for a broad patch of sky. Make sure trees do not obstruct the view.
