Washington, Jan 16: Whoopi Goldberg has praised late Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry for representing black people in his iconic science-fiction show.

Roddenberry, who passed away in 1991, hired African-American actress Nichelle Nichols a lead character in the original 1969 TV series, at a time when the black community wasn''t well represented in sci-fi programmes.

And the Oscar-winner said the TV legend's actions inspired her to take on a role in the show''s successful spin-off, `Star Trek: The Next Generation'.

The ‘Ghost’ actress is convinced that working with the ‘Vanilla Sky’ actor would get her an Oscar, as he has proved lucky for many of his co-actors.

Whoopi, who is baffled as to why the Hollywood hunk hasn’t won any Oscar till date, mentions the example of Cuba Gooding Junior, who acted alongside Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire and won an Oscar.

"One of the reasons I want to work with him is that he seems to gather Academy Award nominations for the people he works with,” Contactmusic quoted Whoopi, as saying.

The actress, who had received critical acclaim for her part as singer-turned-nun Deloris Van Cartier in the 1992 film, has written a musical version of the movie.

And now, the stage version of the story will open in London next year (09).

However, Goldberg has claimed that she has no plans to reprise her role in front of live audience.

The actress-comedienne-TV host, under her production company ‘Whoop Inc.’, has inked a development deal with Discovery Emerging Networks - the organisation behind the Discovery and Science Channel.

The Oscar-winner is set to work with her production partner Tom Leonardis to develop series of which at least one will broadcasted by the network, Variety reports.
