US envoy Holbrooke meets with Indian officials

Richard HolbrookeNew Delhi - Richard Holbrooke, the US special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, held talks Monday with Indian leaders in New Delhi on the last leg of a fact-finding tour to the region.

Holbrooke, who had earlier visited Pakistan and Afghanistan, met with Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee, an official of the External Affairs Ministry said.

The two leaders were expected to discuss the November terrorist attacks in Mumbai, a diplomatic official said earlier.

Islamabad, Feb. 10 : Richard Halbrooke, the United States special envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan, met Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday here.

According to The News, several topics including the prevailing tension with India, the turbulent situation along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, and the US led `war on terror' were discussed at the meeting.

The increasing insurgency in the Federally Administered Tribal Region (FATA) and Taliban's growing influence in the region were also taken up during the talks.

Sevearal other top officials, including the US Ambassador to Pakistan Anne W. Patterson and Interior Advisor Rehman Malik were also present in the meeting.

"We believe that not only Pakistan and Afghanistan, but the whole region is badly affected by terrorism and extremism and we hope that Ambassador Holbrooke would see the issue in the regional context," diplomatic sources said ahead of Holbrooke's visit to the region on Monday.
