US envoy Holbrooke meets with Indian officials

Richard HolbrookeNew Delhi - Richard Holbrooke, the US special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, held talks Monday with Indian leaders in New Delhi on the last leg of a fact-finding tour to the region.

Holbrooke, who had earlier visited Pakistan and Afghanistan, met with Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee, an official of the External Affairs Ministry said.

The two leaders were expected to discuss the November terrorist attacks in Mumbai, a diplomatic official said earlier.

India has claimed elements in Pakistan were behind the attacks, which left more than 170 dead in the Indian financial hub, and submitted a dossier of evidence to Pakistan.

Pakistan on Thursday admitted that the attacks were partly planned on its territory and said a criminal case was registered against the suspects, many of whom were already in police custody.

"India will apprise the envoy about its assessment of the threat of terrorism emanating from Pakistan, particularly in the backdrop of the Mumbai attacks," the diplomatic official said.

"We attach importance to the talks as this would be the first visit of a senior official from the new US administration to India after Barack Obama became president," he added.

Holbrooke's discussions with Indian leaders were also expected to include the volatile situation in Afghanistan.

India is involved in major reconstruction work in Afghanistan, for which it has pledged 1.2 billion dollars.

The US special representative held talks earlier Monday with National Security Advisor MK Narayanan and Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon. (dpa)
