India, US sign 123 agreement on civil nuclear deal

Condoleezza Rice, Pranab MukherjeeWashington, Oct. 11 : India and the United States signed the 123 Agreement in Washington on Friday night, paving the way for nuclear commerce between the two countries.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice formally signed the landmark bilateral nuclear cooperation accord.

After signing the agreement, Mukherjee said, "Both India and the US Administration have now completed all our internal procedures to be able to sign this path breaking agreement."

India has right to test, others have right to react: Pranab Mukherjee

External Affairs Minister Pranab MukherjeeNew Delhi, Oct 3: External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Friday said that India has a right to conduct a nuclear test, while others have a right to react.

Talking to the television channel CNN-IBN, Mukherjee said: "... India has the right to test, others have the right to react," when asked to comment on India's options to conduct an atomic test after signing the Indo-US nuclear deal.

Government panel to review defence personnel pay hike

Pranab MukherjeeNew Delhi, Sept 27 : A high-level committee headed by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee was formed by the Centre on Saturday to address the Armed forces'' concerns over "anomalies" in the Central Sixth Pay Commission (CPC) report.

The Defence services have decided to accept the revised pay scales "for the moment" and submit the salary bills to the Defence Ministry on Monday, following the formation of the committee.

The three-member committee was constituted following a direction from Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, according to reports.

Nuke deal with US does not infringe on its sovereignty: Pranab Mukherjee

External Affairs Minister Pranab MukherjeeVaranasi, Sept 27: External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee has said that a nuclear deal with the US will be bound by international conventions on bilateral treaties.

"As a sovereign country, when we enter into any agreement with a sovereign nation, it is guided by the law of treaty and for that there is a guiding principle, evolved over the years, Vienna Convention, and all other ways in which the international treaties are being governed," Mukherjee said on the sidelines of a seminar here yesterday.
