Visiting Chinese Foreign Minister meets Manmohan Singh

Manmohan Singh, Yang JeichiNew Delhi, Sept 8 : Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jeichi, who is on a three-day visit to India, met Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh soon after his arrival in New Delhi on Monday.

Jeichi who began his India visit with an overnight stay in Kolkata met West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and expressed Beijing''s keen interest in making investments in various fields in India including infrastructure building.

The Chinese Foreign Minister is scheduled to meet his Indian counterpart later in the day.

Chinese Foreign Minister to meet Manmohan, Pranab today

New Delhi, Sept 8 : Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, who arrived in Kolkata on a three-day visit to India on Sunday, will reach here this afternoon to meet Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and to hold delegation level talks with the External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee. 

The Indian leadership is expected to convey its disappointment about Beijing''''s stand at NSG meet at Vienna for granting waiver to New Delhi''''s nuclear trade.

Reports from Vienna suggested that China, which initially refrained from saying much on the India-specific waiver from the (NSG), started playing an "active role" to try to block a consensus before the nuclear cartel decided to give India the waiver on Saturday.

US Congress to take up ratification of 123 Agreement

Washington, Sept 7: The Bush Administration is all set to push the Indo-US civil nuclear deal through the US Congress after the historic waiver from the 45 member Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) in Vienna on Saturday.

The short session of US Congress begins on Monday and will take up ratification of the 123 Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement signed between President, George W. Bush and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in July 2005.

Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice told reporters in Algiers that she has already talked to the heads of the Committees of both the Houses of Congress for pushing through the deal.

Nuclear ban ends for India, big business begins

New Delhi (dpa) - The Nuclear Suppliers Group's decision to allow trade in fissile materials and technology with India ending a 34-year ban is an acknowledgement of India's position as a responsible nuclear weapons state and would boost the global nuclear industry, officials and analysts said Sunday.

The Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), a body that controls all international trade in fissile materials, was formed as a reaction to India's nuclear test in 1974.

On Saturday, in Vienna, after three days of hard debate, the 45- member group decided to make an exception to its 1992 guidelines and allow trade with a non-signatory of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty with the capacity to produce nuclear bombs.

PM Expresses Deep Concern Over Steep Price-Rises

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed his concern over the steep increase in the global oil and commodity prices but hoped that these will not hinder the economic growth as the government is doing its best to moderate the rising prices.

While laying the foundation stone for Rs 1,750 crore expansion project of Salem Steel Plant in Tamil Nadu on Friday, the PM commented “In the last few months, because of the steep increase in international prices of petroleum products and primary commodities, -inflation and its control have emerged as a major concerns of policy. We have taken steps to moderate the rise in prices. In so doing, we have also tried to ensure that inflation control measures do not hurt the growth momentum we have built up in the last four years.”

India gets NSG waiver

Manmohan SinghVienna, Sept 6 : The 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) has agreed to grant India a "clean waiver" here today.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had a meeting with External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and National Security Advisor Shicshankar Menon in New Delhi after two days of talks failed to break a deadlock in the NSG over granting a clean waiver to India.

On Friday, Pranab Mukherjee had issued fresh statement on India''s commitment to non-proliferation.
