Over Thousands of Dusky Gopher Frogs Provided With New Habitat in Jackson County
A recent report has unveiled that a sanctuary located in south Mississippi has released thousands of critically endangered frogs into their new habitat hoping that these amphibians will multiply fast.
A report released by the Sun Herald showed that the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge staff in Gautier released nearly 1, 074 dusky gopher frogs into the refuge ever since May, 2015.
The dusky gopher frogs also known as Mississippi gopher is classified as 'critically endangered' amphibian and was on the endangered-species list since 2001.
Wildlife biologist Angie Dedrickson said in a statement that they are taking an existing population of the frogs from Saucier, in Harrison County, and will be providing them with new habitat so that they can repopulate themselves elsewhere.
"By bringing the frogs to Jackson County, we now have two critically endangered species on our South Mississippi refuge - we also house the endangered Mississippi Sandhill crane", Dedrickson added.
It was also told that the frogs at first were hatched in Saucier and the tadpoles are then moved to the refuge where they are separated in 50 tanks filled with water, pine straw, and sweet gum leaves, in a gallant effort to mimic their natural habitat.
Exerts stated that as soon as the tadpoles developed into frogs, they are placed in different containers, then were shipped to Vancleave, and eventually released into their new home. Each frog was tagged with a tracking device on its leg before it is released into the pond, so that the team can easily monitor and analyze the amphibians well.
According to Dedrickson, the progression from birth to release took a few months, but it will take a few years to fully gauge their efforts.
She said that male frogs are reproductively mature at the age of 1. The females do not reproductively mature until between the ages of 2 and 4. Therefore the team is still unsure how well the frogs are doing at repopulating the area for at least two years.
