Obama imposes deepest CO2 cuts on some states
President Obama says that it is needed to work together to deal with climate change. However, his plans for tackling the condition are taken differently by different states. It seems that some states have different targets compared to others.
Obama said in one of his addresses related to global warming, “Americans across the country are already paying the price of inaction. And reducing carbon dioxide emissions is "exactly the kind of challenge that's big enough to remind us that we're all in this together".
Even then, "clean power plan" of the president relieves some of the states, whereas some others have been focused other way for the reason that they have been imposed with more cuts. As per reports, three states, Hawaii, Vermont, and Alaska have been exempted.
The EPA plan focuses on power plants and it has an aim of reducing CO2 emissions per megawatt/hour of electricity. However, under this, the states can target CO2 emissions on the whole, and an allowance is there for new power plants.
With this, between 2012 and 2030, California can increase its CO2 emissions by 15%. On the other hand, Louisiana will need to reduce emissions by 17%. Louisiana was having approximately the same levels of CO2 as California was having in 2012.
It has been reported that majority of the states affected by the deepest CO2 cuts as per the EPA's new rules are those that voted in favor of Republican in the presidential election held last time. That has been found by the Manhattan Institute's Diana Furchtgott-Roth, when she closely analyzed the EPA's plan.
