NPS to keep superintendent and staff at Lake Erie island landmark monument
The National Park Service is looking forward to keep a superintendent and staff at a Lake Erie island landmark monument. According to Ohio Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, the Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial on South Bass Island will continue to be a separate unit of the park system.
As per reports, the park service wanted to combine the staff managing the Perry's monument site and the River Raisin National Battlefield Park in southeast Michigan.
The monument located in Ohio was made in memory of a big victory in the War of 1812. As per reports, during the battle, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry captured a British fleet. During the war, he commanded "Don't Give Up the Ship".
Several changes have been made by state agriculture and environmental leaders to deal with toxic algae in western Lake Erie. Farmers have been prohibited in northwestern Ohio from spreading manure on frozen and wet fields; they need to undergo training prior to getting approval for commercial fertilizers use.
Kaptur, a Toledo Democrat said, "Just in time for Independence Day, we learned that one of Ohio's most visited National Park sites and a growing attraction will no longer face consolidation and will remain independent. Please allow me to congratulate all of the citizen advocates who made this possible". He added that he also wants to congratulate the National Park Service for their knowledge and attentiveness in deciding something like this.
As per reports, $12 million will be given to farmers who make efforts to reduce the pollutants that assist in growth of the algae.
