Experimental drug prolongs survival in recurrent ovarian cancer patients

Washington, Sept 28 : An experimental drug called pertuzumab may help prolong the survival time for women with recurrent ovarian cancer, a University of Alabama at Birmingham doctor has said.

Dr. Sharmila Makhija, an associate professor in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the university, said that Phase II clinical trial data showed that pertuzumab added weeks to the lives of Stage III ovarian cancer patients, whose disease had returned after treatment with the existing chemotherapy regimens.

Shoaib may face several charges as PCB disciplinary committee meets

Lahore, Sept 28 : Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar is likely to face a number of disciplinary charges when a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) committee meets at the Gaddafi Stadium here today to review charges against the bowler for striking team-mate Mohammad Asif in South Africa early this month.

Disciplinary committee chairman Shafqat Naghmi said the charges against the controversial fast bowler would be reviewed before he is summoned for a hearing.

London, Sept.28 : Britain plans to phase out traditional bulbs by 2011.

The Telegraph quoted Environment Secretary Hilary Benn as telling a Labour conference that he wanted to see an end to the sale of 150-watt bulbs from next January.

Less powerful traditional bulbs would be taken off the shelves in stages under the voluntary energy-saving scheme by 2011, he added.

According to news.com.au, they are the descendants of domestic pigs which explorers such as Captain Cook released as a living larder for future expeditions.

The animals found Australia to be hog heaven, with plentiful food, a balmy climate and no natural predators aside from the occasional crocodile and piglet-pinching dingoes.
