On Thursday, the nonprofit Leapfrog Group and Castlight Health Incorporated unveiled the findings of an analysis about health care services. As per the report, chances of survival of any of four high-risk surgeries can differ by 23% on the selection of hospital.

One of the main reasons of the difference was hospital that a patient chooses. Leapfrog's Erica Mobley said that the hospital one is choosing can be the difference between life and death.

Dr. Ashish Jha of the Harvard School of Public Health said it is quite surprising to know that such variability exists in mortality in common surgeries. In the survey, 1,500 hospitals were involved. They were asked on four risky surgeries and number of other procedures and patient deaths.

Researchers have recognized several genetic markers that allow them to figure out the risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PSTD) among soldiers. The study saw researchers examining blood samples of US Marines before and after deployment.

Published in Tuesday's Journal Molecular Psychiatry, the study talked about a group of genes responsible for regulating innate immune system and interference on signaling in human body. According to the researchers, the gene has a lot to do with the growth of PTSD in soldiers.

About four years ago, three skeletons were found during a construction project on the Caribbean island of St. Martin. According to reports, the skeletons were of two male and one female. The three individuals were believed to have been slaves during the 17th century when the region was ruled by the Dutch and French.

Now, researchers have examined the bones using a new genetic technique. According to the researchers, the study of bones could provide information about the slaves' ethnicity.

Scientists have recently spotted a new dwarf galaxy which is orbiting the Milky Way. But physicists at Carnegie Mellon, Brown and Cambridge Universities after researching about the dwarf galaxy revealed that the galaxy looks like it is radiating gamma rays.

According to scientists they found the galaxy, called Reticulum 2, by studying the data collected during the Dark Energy Survey.

Reticulum 2 is located nearly 98,000 light years away from earth. It is one of the closest dwarf galaxies ever discovered by scientists.

Data from NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope showed that gamma rays from the dwarf galaxy are coming at levels above what is normally expected.

This year's Intel Science Talent Search competition has been won by three American high school seniors. The competition is also called as the 'Super Bowl of Science'.

The competition which is sponsored by Intel and is run by the non-profit Society & the Public is the nation's oldest and is considered to be most prestigious for high school seniors.

The competition started in 1942 as the Westinghouse Science Talent Search. Later in 1998 Intel became the sponsor of the search.

Winners of the top three position of this year's competition includes Noah Golowich, 17, of Lexington, Massachusetts; Andrew Jin, 17, of San Jose, California and Michael Hofmann Winer, 18, of North Bethesda, Maryland.

Duke Energy Progress has been ordered to pay $25.1 million in as fine due to coal ash contamination at a plant near Wilmington, North Carolina.

On Tuesday, the North Carolina State Department of Environmental and Natural Resources made the announcement. The department stated that Duke Energy for several years has allowed huge amount of coal ash contaminants to enter into the groundwater at the facility.

The complete amount will be given to a state fund for public schools. DENR Secretary Donald R. van der Vaart said, "In addition to holding the utility accountable for past contamination we have found across the state, we are also moving expeditiously to remove the threat to our waterways and groundwater from coal ash ponds statewide".
