‘Enigma moth’ discovered in Australia sheds light on evolution of moths and butterflies

Scientists came across a new family of moth in some remote and unexplored region of Australia. The new species sheds light on the way moths and butterflies developed 80 to 100 million years ago.

The Aenigmatinea glatzella, or ‘Enigma moth’, was found on Kangaroo Island in South Australia. The discovery was made in 2009 by local scientist Richard Glatz and published in the Systematic Entomology journal.

The island is only 100km from Adelaide and 13km from the mainland that has been settled since 1836. It is considered to be one of the loveliest destinations for a holiday.

The moth is shielded by gold and purple wings that are about 4mm long, making the creatures exceptionally beautiful. The males and females have golden metallic purple wings respectively.

New study changes previously estimated visualizations regarding Sun's Heliosphere

A new NASA study has suggested that the sun's hemisphere, a bubble around our planets and sun is actually dominated by two giant jets of material shooting backwards over the north and south poles of the sun.

The sun emits charged particles in a stream of plasma called the solar wind. The solar wind, in turn, creates a bubble termed as the heliosphere that extends far beyond the planets of the solar system.

For decades, scientists have visualized the heliosphere in the shape of a comet, with a very long tail extending some 464 billion miles. However, the new study has found that this is not the case. Rather, the sun is emitting these winds in two jets originating from the poles of the sun.
