Public Health Advocates urge Lawmakers to require labels on Sugary Drinks

On Monday, public health advocates asked New York state lawmakers to have labels on soft drinks. According to the health advocates, labeling on sugary drinks will be to warn people about the dangers of diabetes, obesity and tooth decay.

According to reports, the proposed mandate comes as states in the US fight with the costs of some serious diseases related to the American diet. On Monday, Sharon Akabas, a professor at Columbia University's Institute of Human Nutrition, told the state lawmakers that labeling on sugary drinks could discourage the consumption of products that are linked to harmful health conditions.

In Chattanooga, the local allergy sufferers such as 50-year-old Monica Burke don't need to count pollen to know about the arrival of allergy season.

Another sufferer who recently went to the doctor for nasal spray, said that her symptoms at times get so severe that she isn't even able to work.

According to Dr. Susan Raschal, a specialist certified by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology, this year, Chattanooga has seen a slow start to the allergy season but some allergens could hang around longer than usual.

On Monday, Robert Kennedy Jr. made an apology for making use of word 'holocaust' to describe an increase in autism cases.

Kennedy Jr used the term last week during a screening in Sacramento of the film 'Trace Amounts'. The movie connects autism to a vaccine preservative. The nephew of President John F. Kennedy and son of former US Attorney General Robert Kennedy, he said that he was working hard for a way to express the effects of autism on children and their families.

Research needed to prove if Cannabidiol can treat severe Epilepsy

Researchers have found that a detailed study is needed to find if certain marijuana could treat severe epilepsy. On Monday, the researchers said they conducted a small safety study which suggested that the extract cannabidiol should be studied.

The new study will enroll a number of patients earlier this month. Dr. Orrin Devinsky, lead researcher, said the study will compare a highly purified version named Epidiolex with a dummy drug. Devinsky will provide detail about the safety study next week at an American Academy of Neurology meeting.

Devinsky who directs New York University Langone Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, said, "There is a dire need for better epilepsy medications. We may start to get some answers within a year".

Injectable polio vaccine introduced by John Salk turns 60

Injectable polio vaccine that was created in 1955 to combat the virus has turned 60 years old.

The vaccine saved many lives was developed, thousands of children across the globe who were crippled by the dangerous disease poliomyelitis or infantile paralysis caused by poliovirus.

The vaccine was introduced in April 12, 1955 by John Salk for polio treatment AND was declared safe and effective. With this, there was an initiation of a new goal to eradicate polio completely from the face of earth.

World Health Organization (WHO) and National Health Organization are trying to pursue the goal since then. Polio has been eradicated in every country except Pakistan, where 21 new cases of polio have been reported.

13% Rise in US Prescription Drug Spending in 2014

A report released on Tuesday showed a jump of 13% to $374 billion in 2014 in US spending on prescription medicines. The leap is the biggest since 2001, and is attributable to surge in demand for expensive new breakthrough hepatitis C treatments.

The contribution to the double-digit spending rise in 2014 also came from demand for newer cancer and multiple sclerosis treatments, hike in prices of branded medicines, particularly insulin products for diabetes, and introduction of few new generic versions of big-selling drugs.
