Fossilized shark teeth found on coast of North Carolina

Beachgoers in North Topsail Beach and Surf City, North Carolina, have found something that belongs to prehistoric times. They have unearthed fossilized shark teeth some as big as an adult hand. The teeth belonged to a Megalodon, which became extinct around 2.6 million years ago.

Experts at the Aurora Fossil Museum in Aurora, North Carolina, have carried out comparative analysis of modern shark’s teeth and the one lately found from the beach. After the analysis, they have come to know that every inch of a fossilized tooth is equivalent to around 10 feet in shark.

New Baby Orca spotted in Puget Sound

This year seems to be good for endangered orcas in Washington’s Puget Sound as a new calf was seen on 24th October. The newly spotted calf has sparked hope for sound’s orcas whose numbers are booming in 2015.

The new calf has been designated as J53 by the Center for Whale Research. The agency confirmed the presence of the baby orca and said that J53 is the sixth calf born into population since last December.

The new calf was spotted on Saturday with J17, also called Princess Angeline, in Haro Strait. As per the Center for Whale Research, 38-year-old J17 is from J-Pod. The Orca has also given birth to J53. She is also grandmother of J46 and J47, and J17 is her fourth calf.

Comet Lovejoy pumps out 500 Bottles of Alcohol Every Second

Comet Lovejoy, formally designated C/2014 Q2, is the booziest comet in our galaxy as it is spewing about 500 bottles of alcohol every second, according to a researcher from the Paris Observatory in France. The researcher, Nicolas Biver, said it is the first time when a comet has been observed pumping out ethyl alcohol.

Comet Lovejoy is not only releasing alcohol, but a type of sugar, as per observations by Biver, lead author of the research published by Science Advances on October 23. Biver and other researchers found that the comet has been sprinkling out about 21 organic molecules.

UK launches Largest Clinical Trial to Test whether Aspirin can stop Cancer from Returning

A Cancer Research United Kingdom spokeswoman told AFP that around 9,000 patients in the United Kingdom will be recruited, while 2,000 in India will be involved in an anti-cancer trial, which is anticipated to open in 2016.

Researchers planned to separate patients into three different groups: one-third of the participants will be given 100 mg tablets, one-third will receive a 300 mg aspirin tablet each day, while the remaining will receive a placebo.

For past so many years, a lot of debates have been going on with regard to anti-cancer qualities of aspirin. All scientists are hoping that the drug should work as an alternative for cancer treatment and if it happens, it would not be wrong to say that it would be a game changer.

Beluga Whale dies at Georgia Aquarium

In the past three years, three beluga whales have died in the Georgia Aquarium. Among them, two were infants and lately, Maris herself has died. For now, the aquarium could not know the reason behind the death.

In the case of infants, they failed to thrive. On Thursday afternoon, Maris died, but as per the aquarium officials, the 21-year-old beluga whale appeared to be healthy. In fact, she has passed her weakly health exam and no symptom of illness was felt. She was having proper diet.

The death had severely affected the care givers at the aquarium. Visitors who came on Friday morning were not aware of the big loss. Maris was born in 1994 at the New York Aquarium. In 2005, she came to the Georgia Aquarium.

This wide-little eyed girl having a big smile on her face is a star on her own digital storybook known as We’re Amazing, 1, 2, 3! For so many years, Sesame Street has been educating and raising awareness on different topics. Lately, its new character called Julia, described above, is shown having autism.

Julia is part of an initiative known as ‘Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in All Children’. The program can be seen through an app and on computers there are many educational resources available.

Sesame Street said that it is a public television doing public service. The character wants to pass on a message that many children live with autism and there is not much difference in them, it is just that their brains work bit differently.
