Sesame Street’s new Muppet Julia to help reduce stigma associated with autism

This wide-little eyed girl having a big smile on her face is a star on her own digital storybook known as We’re Amazing, 1, 2, 3! For so many years, Sesame Street has been educating and raising awareness on different topics. Lately, its new character called Julia, described above, is shown having autism.

Julia is part of an initiative known as ‘Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in All Children’. The program can be seen through an app and on computers there are many educational resources available.

Sesame Street said that it is a public television doing public service. The character wants to pass on a message that many children live with autism and there is not much difference in them, it is just that their brains work bit differently.

Since the news of this character has broken out, Sesame Street has been receiving a lot of praise. Michael Robb, Director of Research for Common Sense Media, an organization that rates and reviews media focused on children, said that it is commendable on the part of Sesame Street to start the discussion on this topic with so much of ease.

It can be very difficult to start a conversation about children with disabilities. Robb said that they have gone through the show and would like to say that it can help children understand how the character Julia is bit different from them.

It looks like very real and the character speaks and acts in a way, which can be well understood by children. The character shows that it is like other children and also, unveils that how simple adjustments can make thing easier for Julia.
