Eating bacon every day can raise the risk of colorectal cancer: WHO Study

A groundbreaking new study from the World Health Organization has suggested that consumption of bacon every day can give you colorectal cancer. This is a message that could make you realize that yesterday's hot dog might have been a bad decision than you originally thought.

As per an announcement published in The Lancet Oncology by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization (WHO), in terms of cancer risk, consumption of processed meat is as risky as smoking. The study is going to be published in Volume 114 of the IARC Monographs.

The meat that had been preserved or flavor-enhanced using salting, curing, fermentation, smoking, etc is called processed meat.

Space investigation heads to Escalades

The Cassini spacecraft is about to leap towards the minute moon of Saturn, second-largest planet in the solar system, called Escalades. This close approach will give scientists a rare glance into its secrets. Escalades is cold but it is also a home to a warm ocean, along with this it also bears long cuts just like 'tiger stripes'.

Project manager of Cassini Earl Maize said at a NASA briefing on Monday, "We're going to be screaming over the South Pole at around 19,000 mph, just 30 miles above the surface, and we're going to go right through the plume". He added that the flyby will be the most dramatic that the spacecraft has made.

Microorganisms are also present in space

A research paper published in the journal Microbiome has unveiled that despite making efforts to keep spacecraft and cargo sterilized, viruses, bacteria and mold can travel along. In fact, dust particles aboard the ISS also have bacterial pathogens. These bacteria, viruses and pathogens can cause infections to astronauts in space.

Microorganisms that are harmless on earth can cause inflammation in space. Researchers have collected dust from air filter samples and vacuum bags used aboard the ISS. In space, dust and dirt do not settle as they do on earth. It keeps on floating in the zero gravity environment.

Lion Populations declining across Africa

A Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences-published paper has unveiled that lion populations in areas including West, Central and East Africa are declining at sharp rates. The researchers said that the populations will decline by around 50% in the next two decades.

In the research, researchers from the University of Oxford studied surveys of 47 lion populations across Africa. These surveys were carried out since 1990. The researchers considered these surveys and made observations on how the animals would do in the next two decades.

Genetics’ study supports Beringian standstill model

Researchers at the University of Utah have studied the DNA of two babies buried 11,500 years ago. After assessing them, the researchers said that Native Americans have come from people who crossed the Bering land bridge before they settled in North and South America.

The babies were unearthed together from the Upward Sun River site, which is now central Alaska. The researchers said that babies were having different mothers. One of the babies was between 6 to 12 weeks old and the other one was a pre-term fetus.

Parts of Persian Gulf could witness extremely hot summers by century-end

A research paper released on Monday has raised concerns by unveiling that certain parts of the Persian Gulf would witness extremely hot summers owing to human-caused global warming by the end of the century.

The heat would be to such a level that it would become quite difficult for human survival. As per the report's author, coastal cities from Dubai to Iran's Bandar Abbas could face such summers that would be beyond the human habitability limit. In fact, humidity level would be to such an extent that even the fittest people would not be able to stand for many hours outdoors.
